Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Filling
  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 tbsp olive oil optional, if meat is very lean
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard yellow or Dijon
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp chili powder optional for spice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For Serving
  • 4 –6 hamburger buns toasted
  • Pickles optional
  • Coleslaw optional topping

Equipment

  • Large skillet or sauté pan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Serving spoon
  • Toasting pan or skillet for buns

Method

Brown the Ground Beef
  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat if needed. This step builds the base flavor.
Sauté the Vegetables
  1. Add diced onions, bell peppers, and garlic. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened and fragrant. These veggies give the sauce depth and texture.
Build the Sauce
  1. Add tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Stir until everything is well combined.
Simmer Gently
  1. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken as it cooks. Taste and adjust seasoning—more sugar for sweetness, mustard for tang, or paprika for smokiness.
Toast the Buns
  1. Lightly toast the buns in a skillet or oven until golden and warm. This step prevents them from getting soggy and adds a subtle crunch.
Assemble and Serve
  1. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture over toasted buns. Add pickles or coleslaw if desired. Serve immediately while hot and saucy.
