Method

Step 1. Preheat Oven and Prepare the Pan
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
Step 2. Brown the Sausage
  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced smoked sausage and cook until golden brown on the edges.
  3. This step deepens the flavor and adds irresistible texture.
Step 3. Caramelize the Onions
  1. Add butter to the skillet and stir in sliced onions.
  2. Cook for 8–10 minutes until soft, golden, and fragrant.
  3. Expert Note: Slow cooking the onions enhances their sweetness and balances the richness of the cheese sauce.
Step 4. Prepare the Creamy Cheese Sauce
  1. In a medium bowl, mix together:
  2. Sour cream
  3. Cheddar cheese
  4. Mozzarella
  5. Chicken broth or milk
  6. Garlic powder
  7. Onion powder
  8. Paprika
  9. Black pepper
  10. Stir until smooth. Adjust thickness with more broth if needed.
Step 5. Assemble the Casserole
  1. Layer frozen pierogies evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  2. Top with browned sausage and onions.
  3. Pour the cheese sauce over everything and spread gently.
  4. Sprinkle with extra cheese if you want an extra golden top.
Step 6. Bake Until Hot and Bubbly
  1. Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.
  2. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving to allow the layers to settle.
