Method

Preheat and Prepare
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
Cook the Sausage
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart with a spatula.
  2. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Optional: Sauté diced onions and bell peppers in the same pan for extra flavor.
Prepare the Egg Mixture
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until smooth.
  2. Add 1½ cups of shredded cheese to the mixture and stir lightly.
Assemble the Casserole
  1. Spread the cubed bread evenly in the greased baking dish.
  2. Sprinkle cooked sausage and vegetables over the bread.
  3. Pour the egg and cheese mixture evenly over the top, ensuring everything is soaked.
  4. Top with the remaining ½ cup of shredded cheese.
  5. Pro Tip: Press down lightly to ensure the bread absorbs the egg mixture for a custardy texture.
Bake
  1. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  2. Remove foil and bake an additional 10–15 minutes until the casserole is set and the cheese is golden brown.
  3. Insert a knife into the center; it should come out clean when done.
Rest and Serve
  1. Allow the casserole to rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. This helps it set and makes serving easier.
  2. Serving Suggestions:
  3. Serve with fresh fruit or a green salad.
  4. Top with hot sauce, salsa, or avocado for extra flavor.
  5. Great with a side of toast or breakfast potatoes.
